A First-Time Buyer's Checklist Before Visiting a Dealership
Walking into a showroom without a plan is how most buyers end up overpaying for add-ons they never wanted. A little preparation changes the entire negotiation dynamic in your favour.
Before you go
Decide your budget including on-road costs, not just the ex-showroom price you saw online. Registration, insurance, and handling charges can add a meaningful percentage on top of the sticker price, and dealers rarely lead with that number.
At the dealership
Get the full on-road price breakdown in writing before discussing any discount. Ask explicitly what is negotiable versus fixed, and treat accessory packages and extended warranties as separate decisions from the car itself.
After the test drive
Sleep on it. Dealership offers that expire “today only” are a pressure tactic, not a genuine limited-time discount in most cases. A real deal will still be there tomorrow.
