EVs in India: What Actually Changed in 2026
Electric cars stopped being a niche purchase in India this year. Charging infrastructure expanded well beyond the metro belt, and several mainstream brands pushed their electric line-ups down into more affordable segments.
What actually changed
Three things moved the needle: battery costs kept falling, public fast-chargers reached more highway stretches connecting tier-2 cities, and state subsidies stayed in place for another year, keeping on-road prices competitive against equivalent petrol trims.
The catch buyers still run into
Home charging access remains the real decider. Apartment dwellers without a dedicated parking point with a power connection often find the ownership experience harder than the brochure suggests, regardless of how far the car can travel on a single charge.
Our take
If you can charge at home or at work reliably, an EV now makes sense for most daily driving patterns in India. If you cannot, a strong hybrid is still the more practical middle ground for 2026.
