Petrol vs Diesel vs CNG vs Electric: Which Fuel Type Actually Makes Sense in 2026
Four options at the showroom now instead of two. Every brand pushes its own preferred fuel type hardest, so it helps to work out what actually fits your driving before you sit down with a salesperson.
Petrol
Still the easiest ownership experience: lowest upfront price, service network everywhere, and resale buyers understand it. Makes sense if your annual running is under 12,000 km and you mostly drive in the city.
Diesel
The math only works past high annual mileage now that the price gap with petrol has narrowed. Worth it for genuine highway drivers doing 20,000+ km a year; a poor choice for anyone doing mostly short city trips, since diesel engines dislike being run cold and stop-start.
CNG
The cheapest per-kilometre running cost by a wide margin, and factory-fit CNG kits from major brands have closed the reliability gap with aftermarket kits. The trade-offs: reduced boot space in most hatchbacks and a thinner refuelling network outside major cities.
Electric
