Which SUVs Are Actually Selling in India Right Now
Sales charts shuffle every month, but one pattern has held all year: compact SUVs are winning, and Tata and Hyundai are the ones fighting it out at the top.
The compact SUV fight never really stops
Tata’s Nexon and Punch have spent most of 2026 trading the top spot between them, both crossing 19,000 to 21,000 units in a strong month. The two models alone account for a big chunk of Tata’s overall volume, and their combined ICE-plus-EV sales keep them ahead of dedicated single-fuel rivals.
The Creta is still the one to beat in midsize
Hyundai’s Creta reclaimed the best-selling midsize SUV spot mid-year after briefly losing it, closing the first half of 2026 with over 91,000 units sold. It remains the segment benchmark even as the redesigned Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, and Toyota Hyryder all push harder than they used to.
Thar and Scorpio prove lifestyle SUVs aren't fading
Despite the compact SUV boom, Mahindra’s Thar and Scorpio both stayed comfortably inside the year’s top 15, each moving past 67,000 units in the first half of 2026. A meaningful slice of Indian buyers clearly still want something rugged over something merely efficient.
What the numbers actually mean if you're buying
The top sellers aren’t automatically the ‘best’ cars for you – they’re the ones with the widest dealer network, easiest financing, and broadest variant spread. Worth cross-shopping outside the top five before you decide, since a lot of strong SUVs sell in smaller numbers simply because they launched later or cost more.
