Used Car Auction & Resale Trends — August 2026 Edition

This is the first edition of a monthly read: what is moving in India’s used-car and auction market, and what it means depending on which side of the transaction you are on. Every edition will carry dated, sourced figures — flagged clearly as estimates where the underlying data is directional rather than exact.

What We’re Watching This Month

August sits in the pre-festive lull — the quiet stretch between the monsoon slowdown and the September–November demand spike around Diwali and Dussehra. This is when dealers restock ahead of the festive rush, making it a buyer’s window.

Compact SUVs continue to hold the strongest demand in the used market. Diesel sedans, by contrast, are seeing softer interest — partly seasonal, partly the continued pull of buyers toward SUV body styles.

Segment Watch

Compact SUVs — steady to strong demand, holding value well into the used market. Hatchbacks — consistent, low-volatility demand, particularly Maruti Suzuki models with wide service coverage. Sedans — softer, with diesel variants facing the most resistance. EVs — growing listing volume, but buyer caution around battery health is still keeping offers conservative.

What To Do With This

If you are buying: this pre-festive window is typically a better time to negotiate than October–November, when demand and prices firm up. If you are selling: unless you need to move fast, it is usually worth holding until the festive window opens.
